King Quilt Patterns: Fabric Inspiration - Suzy Quilts (2024)

Welcome to the king of all blog posts. This week is all about king quilt patterns! If you're reading this post, we salute you. You are among the few, the brave, the mega-quilters who take on the largest quilts out there. You have confidence and you know you can do it — and we believe in you too! While making king quilt patterns might seem like it would take too much time, many of the options from the SQ catalog can be made easily and quickly.

Fabric is printed seasonally so once the new fabric season rolls around, it can be hard to find certain prints. If the fabric shown in the mockups (which are mostly solids that are continuously made) is still available, we have listed each fabric shown so that you can get your shopping list ready. You can do it — time to make some king quilt patterns!

The Suzy Quilts Fabric Inspiration Series

Over the course of five blog posts, the SQ team will guide you through some of our most beloved patterns in different color variations including lists of the real fabric colors used in each mockup.

The mockups are all brought to you by Sarah Holst of the shop Sarah Made, who has made kits for some of the mockups that will be available for a limited time, and from Suzy herself. Some of the mockups below by Suzy were previously only available in Suzy Quilts patterns and are being shown on our website for the first time!

The series will be five posts long and cover each common quilt size:

How To Select Your Own Fabric Colors

If you're an adventurous quilter who is interested in creating your very own color mockups, we have some great suggestions!

  • Color Cards: Buying a color card from your favorite fabric manufacturer gives you a small swatch of each fabric so you can see the colors even more truly than they appear on a computer screen. You can use those swatches to select a quilt made entirely out of solids or even match up prints with coordinating solids. Plus don't miss ourfree tutorial for how to turn a color card into magnetsto make color selection even easier!
  • PreQuilt: Have you heard of this fantastic web-based app? PreQuilt uses colors from real fabric companies, including prints, so you can create your own mockups and see exactly how your will look when finished. We have exclusively partnered with PreQuilt and each pattern in our catalog is available as a digital coloring page, as are all of Suzy's print and solid fabric collection. Check out ourPreQuilt blog postfor video tutorials about how to make your own digital quilt mockups.
  • Coloring Pages: Speaking of coloring pages, each Suzy Quilts pattern comes with a blank coloring page that can be printed and colored in by hand. You can even download most of our coloring pages without buying the patterns inthis blog post!
  • Sew AlongBlog Posts: Did you know that the first week of every Suzy Quilts sew along focuses on selecting fabric for your quilt? Even if you've missed a sew along, you can still see all of the posts, including the Week 1 posts about fabric selection, by heading to theSew Alongsection of our website.
  • Local Quilt Shops: The staff of your local quilt shop would love to help you select fabrics for a quilt! Bring them an inspiration image or even just an idea, along with a picture of the pattern and the fabric requirements, and pretty soon you'll have your own quilt kit made with your new pals at the quilt shop

About King Quilt Patterns

King beds have grown in popularity, and so quilt patterns have followed by making sure most patterns include instructions for a king. There are even fifteen king quilt patterns in the SQ catalog.

While we love to see king quilts made, this quilt size has one limitation — all designs aren't right for the size. If a Suzy Quilts pattern does not include a king size option, it's for a good reason including things like long bias pieces that could easily stretch or straight strips that become hard to piece and sew accurately the larger they become.

OurUltimate Guide to Quilt Sizes says that a standard king quilt size is 110" x 108", but that doesn't mean you can't play around with the size. It may be hard to get much bigger than that though since the fabric will become harder to handle.

Now let's look at mockups for king quilt patterns! You'll see inspiration photos, digital mockups, and even some color comparisons of the same pattern so you can see how small changes can make a big difference in the finished quilt.

Why we love it: Glitter & Glow may take some extra time to make in a king size since you'll be making a whopping 440 blocks, but the result is so lovely. If you're the type of quilter who likes to get in the zone and really focus on a repetitive task, this is a great quilt to make in king size.
